Deepfake puppeteering: What mitigation tools do we have against deepfakes? (SIB #3)
Mitigating deep fakes is going to be a constant endevaour
🐳 Deep fake puppeteering: What can we actually do about it?
As deepfakes and AI-generated content get better and more common, finding ways to deal with them is more important than ever. This week, let’s take a closer look at the tools and strategies we have to fight back against this wave of digital manipulation.
Tech Defenses
Testing 2 deepfake detectors with the same video
I have given some detectors the same video. A video of me controlling Harrison Ford’s face via my face. I used Liveportrait for the test. Here is the video:
Deepware (FAILED) :
This is an open-source tool that’s not very good at catching AI-generated videos.
It didn’t catch anything.

____
Deepfactdetector(INCONCLUSIVE = FAILED)
It made an inconclusive conclusion. Its probability data is a good idea and is more useful. Still, it didn’t catch it in full.

Conclusion?
They both failed
Other methods of preventing Deepfakes
______
Blockchain Technology: By creating unchangeable records of digital content, blockchain offers a solid way to verify authenticity, making it a lot harder for deepfakes to pass off as real.
Biometric Voice Recognition: This tech focuses on the audio side, spotting unnatural speech patterns that could point to deepfake manipulation.
Sociological Approaches:
Education and Awareness: The better equipped we all get in questioning what see see before sharing it the better. Educating the public is key.
Fostering a Verification Culture: We need to encourage everyone to routinely check and verify content. If we make this a habit, it could seriously cut down the spread of fake media.
Industry Collaboration: Research institutions and industry groups can help us stay on top of the latest detection tech and best practices.
Legal and Regulatory: Getting legal experts. They can help navigate the complex world of cybercrime laws, providing support for deepfake victims and addressing issues like identity theft and defamation.
Social Media Monitoring: Brands should keep a close eye on what’s being said about them online to spot and deal with deepfakes quickly.
Tackling deepfakes isn’t just about better tech—it’s also about changing how we think and act online. We need both innovative detection tools and a push for digital literacy and critical thinking. That’s the only way we’ll be able to manage the risks deepfakes bring and protect the integrity of our digital world.
